Overview
Students face increasing mental health challenges, but accessing effective support is often difficult and confusing, with barriers such as stigma, cost, and lack of awareness making it difficult for them to get the help they need. Concord is an all-in-one app featuring professional mental health support, transparent health information, and community building among college students.
My Role
My role focused on user research and visual design. I contributed to personas, journey mapping, user research, user testing, presentations, and branding.
Discovery
We talked with numerous college students facing mental health struggles that affected academic performance and general well-being.
"And I’ve noticed that even when I’m feeling down and want to see a therapist, by the time I get there, it's too late for me to feel taken care of." - Participant 1
"I think that contacting medical institutions here is difficult. I prefer dealing with it myself or talking to friends rather than seeking help from the school." - Participant 2

Problem Statement
Students face increasing mental health challenges, but accessing effective support is often difficult and confusing, with barriers such as stigma, cost, and lack of awareness making it difficult for them to get the help they need.
Why?
Students often get lost in complex information related to mental health resources. Current systems fail to track students’ emotional states over time, missing key opportunities for early intervention and proactive support. Students face delays in accessing mental health, therefore they feel isolated in their struggles, lacking a way to connect with peers in the same boat.
How might we make mental health resources more accessible and transparent for students?
How might we create features that continuously and unobtrusively track students’ emotional well-being to provide timely and relevant support?
How might we facilitate peer connections and group support to reduce isolation and improve access to mental health resources?
Sketches
By sketching our initial ideas, we threw away thoughts or concepts that were too obvious or unrefreshing.
User Testing
We interviewed 12 people and gathered 70 surveys ranging from mental health professionals to college students. Participants also were tasked with testing our prototype, resulting in a 89% system usability score. Without our participants' support, we wouldn't have been able to improve our interface as much as we thought was possible.

Reflection
What surprised me about this project was that going through multiple iterations powered by user testing sped up the success of the project by huge margins. Furthermore, open communication and being more confident in my work was a strength that propelled the team to feel comfortable.
